There are so many exciting, romantic and simple ways to get to San Juan Island, Washington. The one you choose will largely depend on where you are coming from. The Washington State Ferry system from Anacortes, Washington to Friday Harbor is by far the most common way to get here.

Driving Directions to Anacortes Washington and the San Juan Island Ferries
Anacortes, Washington is a roughly 90-minute drive either north from Seattle, WA or south from Vancouver, B.C. Canada. From Interstate 5, take exit 230 following Highway 20 West to Anacortes Washington. Freeway signs will also mention the San Juan Island ferries. Drive through Anacortes, following signs to the San Juan Island ferries (turn left at the stop light next to the Safeway grocery store and follow that road roughly six miles to the docks).

If you are flying into Seattle, or visiting other towns in the area, you might consider some of the options below.

From Sea-Tac Airport

San Juan Airlines and Kenmore Air offer several scheduled flights daily between Friday Harbor, Washington and Seattle, Washington, with courtesy van shuttles from Sea-Tac Airport to their Seattle departure areas.

• If you will arrive on San Juan Island by air, alert The Friday Harbor Inn when you make your reservation by calling us at 360-378-4000 to request our complimentary Friday Harbor shuttle service. Once you’re on the island without a car, you can still see San Juan Island’s best sights thank to the regularly scheduled shuttle service of San Juan Transit.
• If you don’t want to fly with the smaller local airlines, the Airporter Shuttle runs a bus from Sea-Tac and other Puget Sound locations right to the Anacortes ferry terminal. Call 800-235-5247 for schedule and fares.
• Of course, you can also rent a car at Sea-Tac and drive roughly 90 minutes north to the San Juan Island ferries in Anacortes, Washington.

From Seattle Washington

San Juan Airlines offers several scheduled, non-stop flights to Friday Harbor daily in their all-weather, turbo-prop, Cessna Caravan. Call 1-800-874-4434 for reservations and information.

Kenmore Air offers classic seaplane transportation to Friday Harbor off the waters of Lake Union and north Lake Washington in Seattle. The most romantic way to get here any time of year!

The Victoria Clipper departs once daily during the summer from downtown Seattle, stopping in Friday Harbor en-route to Victoria, B.C.

From Port Townsend Washington and the Olympic Peninsula

From Port Townsend, Washington and the Olympic Peninsula, the Puget Sound Express operates a passenger ferry to Friday Harbor seasonally.

From Bellingham Washington

San Juan Airlines provides a cost-effective and efficient way to arrive on San Juan Island from Bellingham Washington, year-round. Call 1-800-874-4434 for reservations and information.

The San Juan Island Shuttle Express and The San Juan Island Commuter operate passenger ferries seasonally with stops at Friday Harbor and some lesser-known islands.

From Anacortes Washington

Ferries are a romantic and nostalgic part of any island visit, but the San Juan Islands really lend themselves to air travel; and it’s more affordable than you might think! To and From Sidney B.C. and Victoria B.C. in Canada

Victoria Express offers perhaps the most convenient and cost-effective way to travel between Friday Harbor and Victoria B.C. One of the prime benefits is that they dock in Victoria’s inner harbor in the heart of downtown Victoria.

The Washington State Ferry departs once daily between Friday Harbor and Sidney B.C. (30 minutes from Victoria). Reservations are recommended westbound, and eastbound reservations are not offered. Call 800-84-FERRY for recorded schedule information.
