In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.

Cattle Point Light House

There is a great short hike to the southernmost tip of the island that doesn’t seem to get used very often.  Drive south past American Camp on Cattle Point rd and look for a little turn out on the right just as the road bends off the left.  Park, jump the fence and pick up the trail heading out to the point.  Once there, you’ll be treated to about a 300 degree water view featuring Lopez island, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic mountians.  Wow!

My favorite island hike is Young Hill especially at sunset it is about a 3 mile walk each way and it is fairly steep but worth the views of Garrison Bay and Mosquito pass. My favorite thing to do is take a small picnic lunch, my favorite drink and enjoy them while the sun sets.
And just a little side not for all you romantics; A young man stayed here at Friday’s last summer and wanted to propose to his girlfriend. He asked me for some suggestions and I gave him a couple but he ended up sneaking a couple of glasses, a bottle of wine and some snacks in his backpack, hiking up Young hill, and proposing at sunset! When they came back he said it was beautiful and perfect.

Another great easy walk is American camp I love going out there because I always encounter our island foxes who are not the least bit shy. They will come up real close and I’ve even been followed a time or two. While you’re out at American camp definitely try and find a little known little cove called Granny’s cove there is rarely anyone there and it has really fine light colored sand, which is rare for the island.

One of my favorite hikes is along the west side. A good long easy hike starts at Deadman’s Cove and goes north past the Lime Kiln light house and up to the old kilns. My favorite part is that you almost never see anyone at the kilns so you can have a wonderful picnic or spend a quiet afternoon hanging out by the water.
