Talk about a revolution…
Maybe revolution is too strong a word, but taking our funky vintage motel and adding cool resort hotel features like the full-service spa, high speed wireless and free beach cruiser bikes is a brand new concept. Everyone here at Dwellings is really looking forward to hearing what you have to say about ELEMENTS San Juan Island hotel & spa in Friday Harbor, WA; praise, criticism, suggestions, raves–we want to hear what you think about our great Friday Harbor hotel experiment. We took a suprise trip (there were 4 of us) for a birthday celebration the first week of Oct 2007. We had a great time, perfect weather, and saw about 40+ whales off Lime Kilm State Park (from the shore!). I’d have to say other than meeting Mona, riding the mopeds, and the laughter we all shared.. the view of watching the whales was the highlight of our trip. We could hear them come up for breaths, we took lots of photos and will remember it for a life time. The staff at hotel elements was wonderful , our room was comfortable, clean, and very nice.. Only suggestion I can think of…. warmer Hot Tub.

The Elements Hotel was a nice get-a-way. The rooms were gorgeous. We enjoyed our stay and plan on returning. However, we went out to dinner with the kids, at the bowling alley,I don’t think they like out of towners. Because they snubbed us. We were there for twenty minutes, no menus, no server. Two other tables came in after us, they must have been locals because … they got menus, water, and a smiling server. We finally got the hint and went downtown further to Front Street Ale House, it was great! Thanks for a wonderful room, Tammy

Dennis and I brought our son and his fiance to San Juan Island in September as part of our planning for their wedding there next September. We stayed at Elements and were very impressed. The rooms were lovely and the beds very comfortable. We also appreciated all of the amenities, and would love to return soon.
Thanks

Scott and I showed up just as the last of the Labour Day crowd left, not really knowing what to expect (I’d always stayed on Orcas Island in the past): we just wanted to share a vacation. Checking in was a breeze, even tho’ an elder conference was also getting set up at the same time. The Earth Room was perfect for traveling friends with big comfy beds and a dark, warm interior. The room literature had excellent food recommendations and the wi-fi worked wonderfully so I could take care of a little business while away from home.
Ah, and then there were the courtesy bikes. What a wonderful idea! We wound up riding to Roche Harbour for lunch and, not having any idea what we were getting into, we eventually wound up riding over the high point of the island (we walked the bikes up that hill) and coasted back into the parking lot. Not a big adventure, but quite a little workout!
We wound up renting a bike w/gears (Scott) and a moped (moi) for our next major day of island exploration. The island was gorgeous, the people were friendly and we would probably have missed out on the whole wonderful experience had your hotel not had such an interesting and inviting website encouraging us to stay somewhere where we could leave the car at Anacortes as everything is conveniently located from the hotel.
Love your housekeeping staff and their ability to accomplish their work like elves: quietly and efficiently! Love your “green” options and the whole town’s emphasis on keeping it “local”. Stay happy and affordable!

My new sweetie and I recently stayed at Elements. Our visit to the island in mid Sept - was the best weekend ever. The weather was fantastic, Elements was as comfortable as our own home, and we enjoyed every ounce of it. From the Pool, the Spa, the Sauna and the Courtesy Bikes – we have since recommended Elements to many of our friends and in our return visit we would not consider accommodations any where else.
Thanks for an amazing weekend, it made our first trip together one we’ll never forget!!

I loved staying at Elements. It was a good value for the quality of the room and amenities. I actually stayed there twice and enjoyed it both times. Objectively speaking, the islands are such wonderful vacation spots that one could stay anywhere and have a wonderful time. It’s nice still have to have somewhere nice to stay while one is vacationing.

Hi James Loflin:
we get our soaps and shampoos from Davies Gate. Go to www.daviesgate.com to order online. I agree, they have wonderful products. Thanks for your nice response. We hope you come visit us again soon.
November 30th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
just wanted to say we really enjoyed our stary there. We went for our sons wedding which was at your location. That was what made me want to stay there in the first place. Glad I did. We were placed directly across from the conf room which was soooooo convenient. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was nice, clean and roomy for what we needed. Liked the bar with the bar stool. Only suggestion- maybe seal or put a lacquer finish on the area by the sink so that it doesnt wear as fast. It is great decorating and it was already looking weathered. Not that it took away from anything, but may be more money in the long run to fix or replace. thanks for everything. will be back.
November 30th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
We spent our anniversary in one of the Sky Rooms. Didn’t know what to expect, and but we were happy. There were a few things that needed to be fixed, as the rooms were newly remodeled. It seems that management was very responsive to suggestions. Beware, the bed was quite hard. Maybe it was just our room, but firm is an understatement. Very calm colors in the room made it not seem so bad however. We would come back to stay as prices were not as high as other places in Friday Harbor.
November 30th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
We travel quite a bit and generally to different places. Wherever we plan on staying we do a great deal of research on the place we will stay, so that we won’t be negatively surprised.
I can’t tell you enough how pleasant our stay was at Elements. We initially were concerned about the low price for the rooms and seriously were concerned that maybe the hotel would be sub-par. We were very pleasantly surprised! The amenities in the “Earth” room we stayed in we quite nice. The entire complex is very relaxing and very pleasant.
We especially enjoyed the soaps, shampoos and lotions that were in the room. They were very luxurious and very natural in their ingredients. We’ve stayed in 5 star hotels and they were nice and we would likely stay in those hotels again, but we will definitely stay at the Elements Hotel and Spa when we travel through or to the San Juan Islands again!
The staff were always kind and helpful with any request we asked and also in pointing out places we should see and places to eat or shop.
Thank you all for making our stay so pleasant and rememberable.
Best Regards,
James Loflin
P.S. Where do you find those soaps, shampoos and lotions so cheap?
September 27th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
Thanks for those great comments, Karen. I see what you mean about the blinds, so we’ll look into the curtains. As for the spa, there was supposed to be a spa menu in your room, so we’ll take care of that too. The spa is the building on the right as you exit the parking lot onto Spring Street. I’m really sorry you missed that. Let us know next time you’re on the island and we’ll make sure you have everything you need. Thanks again!

We decided to go to Friday Harbor on the spur of the moment. We called the Monday before and got the last “Sky” room available from Sept. 15-17. It’s the room with one king-size bed. We were given good information from the front desk about the ferry schedule and directions to hotel.
When we checked in–we were early and the room wasn’t ready–but we did all the paper work and just returned for the key at 3. The front desk was VERY helpful–giving us directions for lunch places and they made dinner reservations for us at Backdoor Kitchen (a great!!!! restaurant) and at Steps Bar and Grill (another great restaurant –but different from Backdoor). Both restaurants used local produce, seafood and meat–chefs at both were very unique in their combinations and presentations–we loved them both for different reasons.
Our room: I was a bit worried when we saw that our room was right next to the housekeeping/laundry room. I was worried about noise and early mornings. But neither was a problem. Elements is an older motel with a great face-lift. The structure still squeaks (water pipes tap, tap, tapping and noisy floor boards) but it just adds to the charm. Rememeber, you are in a small beautiful coastal town–not a urban uptight city–you just go with the flow. We unplugged the noisy small refrigerator at night–we plugged in our ipod (to the furnished ipod machine) and we enjoyed the “quirkiness”. The bed and linens were very nice and great quality as were the bath products. The only suggestion I would offer is to buy drapes for the ground floor rooms. The blinds are nice, but when cars park at night the headlights shine directly into the room. An easy fix, i think.
We looked at the San Juan Hotel-and for the price difference, I don’t think it’s worth it. Elements gave us the “adventure and relaxing” trip we were looking for. We would stay there again.
My only question–we never found the “spa” part of the hotel. There was no information in the binder in the book–so we didn’t know if the “spa” part of the hotel was not available off-season. I never asked the front desk–always forgot. Next time I will inquire when we make the reservation.

The beds are really comfortable. The decoration/design choices were great. And the super hot shower with great pressure and a gorgeous shower head was very welcome. The room felt clean when we arrived.
I knew to expect an updated MOTEL but still. . . the Earth Place room (111) felt small, dark and claustrophobic. No bother . . we just spent more time walking and biking. The gardens and hanging flower baskets go along way in cheering up the hotel/motel.
The guest computer in the lobby was handy for quickly catching up on e-mail.
The jacuzzi was warm (not hot) and the pool area is appealing only to children.
The free beach cruisers worked out GREAT for a bike loop out past Jackson’s beach.
The lobby seemed to be out of coffee whenever I was looking for some. . .
August 11th, 2007 at 9:30 am
We stayed here in mid-July, and didn’t get a chance to spend much time in the hotel. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. Our only complaint was the jetted tub/shower didn’t drain well, and thus we were unable to use it. The location was convenient and the staff was friendly. Thanks for adding to our wonderful trip to San Juan.

Dear Elements: My friend, Yvonne, and I stayed at your HEAVENLY Friday Harbor spa hotel in early July. We couldn’t have been happier with the room (how very cool!!), the location (so convenient to everything, and yet not in the super-busy part of town - an oasis!), and the staff (ohmygosh they were both fun and helpful over and over again!). It was a perfect stay in every way. We also had massages from Susan (another heaven-on-earth experience!). Just writing this is bringing back womderful memories. We will definitely return, as soon as we can. We had such a good time during our stay that we picked up real estate info!
July 28th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
We had a nice stay; our room was clean, the beds were very comfortable, the bicycles are fantastic! Only problem was that the little refrigerator froze all our sodas, lettuce, lunch stuff. And we would’ve liked refills on the coffee supplies, so that we could have coffee on our second morning there. Otherwise, very nice place, and convenient location.
July 27th, 2007 at 8:31 am
We are extremely pleased with our experience at Elements. Friendly staff, nice, spacious room, great pool, good vibes all around. My wife and I both had massages at the spa as well — excellent. This web site is quite impressive, too, and the wireless internet access (which I’m using right now) is a nice fringe benefit, as are the cool beach cruiser bikes.
There was one goof up, but they redeemed themselves quite nicely: I had signed up for the champagne and chocolate romance package. It hadn’t materialized in our room when we arrived. Not a big deal, really; I just asked that it be credited back to my card. The next day, however, we got a surprise delivery of a free bottle of champagne and fine chocolates. We would definitely stay here again.

Last weekend was my first overnight visit to Friday Harbor and I was very pleasantly surprised by our accomodations (we were traveling with a Trendwest group and all the arrangements had been made by them). I will definitely be back again! We stayed in an Earth room and loved it - the beds were awesome and everything was clean and fresh. The only thing I was at all dissatified with was the quality of the towels, but I see that this has already been addressed.
We didn’t have time to take advantage of the bicycles or the pool, but loved the lights in the garden area out front. Very pleasant to return to after an evening out on the town. I only wish we could have stayed another night.
Kudos to your wonderful staff for making us all feel welcome - I really appreciated being able to leave our bags after checkout while we went kayaking and enjoyed the sights before it was time to head home. I look forward to our next visit…
July 25th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
My wife and I were fortunate enough to stay at the Elements during our family whale trip. Everything about it was relaxing and nice. Most places are challenging to stay at with our (3) children but we were pleasantly surprised how comfortable and smooth everything went. The room we stayed in had 2 great beds with the most wonderful comforters as well as other accommodations similar to home.
Thank you for having us Elements.
Sincerely,
The Flett family

I stayed in a “Sky Room” on July 4th. It was a lovely. Freshly redecorated with all the modern comforts. Including a bed that made you feel like you were at home, not in a hotel room. Actually it was made up so pretty that I felt bad messing it up. The rain shower head was great even if the shower itself had not been replaced in the remodel. The management thought of everything even to the point of having a fan in the room which I really appreciated. The surroundings were well kept and atractive. Since I only spent one night I didn’t have time to enjoy the pool or spa but next time I will plan more time and look forward to that experience. Well Done Elements.
July 20th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
I have just returned from a wonderful trip to the San Juan Islands. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our two nights stay at Elements. We were impressed by the interior decor and the grounds - both definitely lived up to the impression the website provided. We also really appreciated the helpful staff and were pleasantly surprised when we were told we could leave our vehicle and our luggage at the hotel while we were away on a three day kayak trip. It was a free, safe convenience that went above and beyond the expected service. The Beach Cruiser bikes were awesome - what a great feature that allowed us to explore the area in a way that we wouldn’t have otherwise.
I’d definitely recommend Elements to others - and look forward to returning there one day myself.
Thanks!

I recently was up at Elements for a weekend getaway. Although we did not spend much time in the room, it was very clean, pleasant, and surprisingly modern. Due to other planned activities, we were not able to experience any spa treatments or the pool facilities, but the girls at the front desk were very friendly and helpful during the whole stay! With a price comparable to the Best Western, I’d have to say I would definitely recommend your place to friends.

This is a really good point, Jeff, and thank you so much for putting it in exactly the same terms we think about. We always want to exceed expectations. The dilemma about what to call ourselves haunts us day and night. “Motel,” that’s the structure of our property and it’s the core of who we are; but what kind of motel has an on-site spa, free beach cruisers bikes, high-speed wireless everywhere, a heated indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and fitness studio, room service by a top-notch restaurant and a reception staff of local experts ready to help you arrange whale watching, sea kayaking, dinner reservations and many other island adventures? We like the motel structure. It reminds me of traveling the Pacific Northwest as a kid in the 60’s and 70’s, before lodging was all cookie-cutter boxes or upscale chintz. We are way out on a limb here with our fiercely independent, unashamedly quirky, hybrid hotel/motel, combining ingredients most of our guests have never seen combined before. It’s like the herb infused cocktail of lodging. Some people will come here, take a sip and flag down the server for some good old-fashioned, tried and true replacement. Others, hopefully most, will stand back, take it all in and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Elements is something that’s worth a try, lots of people are having a great time here right now. But lodging is definitely not one-size-fits all. If you have any questions, give us a call or drop us an email. It is our genuine goal to always represent our funky, vintage, hybrid hotel/motel as accurately as possible. Helping you find the right lodging for your personal tastes sometimes means recommending the competition, and that’s something we train all our staff to do when the occasion arises. Enjoy your summer….

When I took “Marketing for Services” in business school a key learning was that you need to exceed customer expetations. By naming your hotel a “spa and resort” my expectations were set high. After sleeping in a room that was basically a standard motel or motor lodge I was a little dissapointed. Granted the location was different, but 3 days later we had a suite at the Silver Cloud Stadium in Seattle with A/C, two rooms, 2 flat sceens, Aveda toiletries and a view of the Puget Sound for about the same price.
There were some nice touches in your lobby, on the grounds, and your staff was very pleasant. However, I wonder if you are not setting expaectations to high with your name and website.

Jeff Jordano

We came to Elements for our honeymoon, and for the most part, enjoyed our stay very much. Loved the room decor & the friendly staff! The “Bunny” robes were a very nice touch! The location was great being right in town, walking distance to everything. The only thing we didn’t like was we bought a summer package with dinner and massage. The massage was GREAT, but the dinner was a little expensive! We didn’t go away hungry by any means, and the food was delicious, but cost more that we’re used to spending. Nine dollars for a third of a glass of wine was a little much. And $35 a plate was a little steep as well! The other thing was the room was a little warm. Couldn’t sleep at night. So air conditioning would be a good investment. I know it doesn’t get that warm there, but when it does, guest comfort is important. Especially when we come to get rest and relaxation. Doesn’t help when we can’t sleep.
Overall, it was a nice place and we had a great time. Saw alot of whales!!!!
Would come again!! Thank you!!!

Hi Autumn: I don’t want any of our guests to get stuck with thin, scratchy towels, so I did a little research. It turns out we have towels of varying newness/oldness, but the consensus around here seems to be that your problem is probably the result of the fact that we are still using standard hotel towels, which tend be less luxurious that standard home towels. So, I talked with the budget department (me, my wife Laura and our general manager Cindy, really) and we have started the process of filling Elements with some plush new towels. It takes a while to source, order and deliver them, but we should have nice, plush new towels in here soon. As for the heat: yeah, we get a heat wave on the island once or twice during the summer and there’s just not much we can do. Usually it’s so cool in the evenings that AC just isn’t an issue. All the rooms now have fans, and about one third have AC. AC is on our wish list for the next renovation wave, in the meantime, if you are concerned about nighttime temps, make sure to request a room with AC. Thanks for your helpful suggestions and comment. I really do appreciate it.
July 16th, 2007 at 11:08 am
We have stayed at the hotel before the renovation and once after last month. First, we do appreciate that you kept your pet policy and would most likely stay again, but there were some disappointing things on our last stay. However, the towels in the rooms are sad… small, thin, and scratchy. Also, my biggest complaint was ventilation in the room itself. Since we could only open the window, which opened out to the parking lot, we couldn’t keep it open to let the room air out during the day when we weren’t there. At night we weren’t comfortable leaving the window open while we slept. It was hot and icky trying to sleep. I finally asked for a fan, which helped, but wasn’t great.
I appreciate that you are taking the time to listen to what your customers think.
July 15th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Sorry you missed the spa, Deborah. You can find a full list of our spa services at http://www.lavenderadayspa.com/. I hope you get a chance to indulge a bit on your next visit. I’ll talk to Raquel, our housekeeping supervisor, about the throw. And, thanks for your comments and suggestions. We look forward to showing you our progress next time….
July 15th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
I admit that I was expecting someting more lavish and a larger room from the photos on the website. The fact that the “throw” on the bed was stained, the shower gel in the tub surround was empty, and the towels were barely larger than a wash cloth just added to the disappointment. I also admit that the spa aspect of Elements went completely by me. I saw no evidence nor received any information at the front desk that a spa really existed. Having said all this, I will say that the rooms were generally clean (”throw” excepted), the bed was very comfortable, the location was perfect, and front desk staff efficient. So here’s my two-cents of advice from a customer’s point of view: 1) don’t oversell yourselves. Your website is misleading, setting the groundwork for disappointment. Sell who/what you are (a funky hybrid…). 2)you have a great common space that will make up for the smallness of the rooms. It needs more and more lush landscapint. You have two tables/chairs there now. Add a kiva for the cooler nights and more tables or seating areas, or perhaps a beautiful water feature amidst better landscaping. This would be a great area for sharing a bottle of wine with a friend/lover, or individual contemplation. It will reinforce the feel you are trying to portray by your name, “Elements,” and make you stand out from the other Inns in the area. If you have spa services - sell them at the point of destination.
July 15th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
We stayed at Elements the night before a 4 day kayaking trip. We loved our “Sun” room - lots of room - perfect for what we needed. Enjoyed the pool and deck. Because it is in the pool area, the exercise room is extremely hot with a fan that doesn’t do much and we couldn’t get the jets to actually run in the hot tub but these were minor things. Most of all, we appreciated the staff’s help and hospitality. We needed to freeze our food for our trip and the gentleman who helped us went way above and beyond the call of duty to accomodate us - even came in the next morning on his day off to make sure that we were able to get our food early before the front desk opened. Very impressive!
July 15th, 2007 at 8:47 am
Hotel and Spa is a nice name but doesn’t fit the motel it is. The rooms opened out to a parking lot with no A/C so had to have the window open all night just to listen to the Garbage truck pick up at 6 AM.
Nice beds with upscale comforters and loved the nice big towels at the pool. I see the attempt at making the place nicer but it is still a motel.
Would not stay again.
July 14th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
Hmmm, we sure don’t mean to misrepresent our room sizes. In fact, our goal is always to under-represent our offerings because we want our guests to be pleasantly surprised when they arrive. Maybe I should measure square fotage and include that in the description? I’ll get on that. In the meantime, everyone should be aware that most Water Places are quite small, Earth and Sky Places are pretty standard and the Sea, Wind and Sun Places are all bigger than standard.
Our room sizes do vary, even withing the categories. Anyone wanting something with extra floor space should get a Sea Place, Wind Place or Sun Place, with the Sea Places being the best value and the Wind Place being the fanciest. There are several Water Places that are bigger than others, so an insider tip is to ask if one of the “poolside” rooms happens to be available. They don’t have AC, but they are, I think, some of our best rooms.
Thanks so much for your feedback, and thanks for staying at ELEMENTS.
July 14th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
Our stay at Elements was a nice peaceful one. The staff was very helpful on siteseeing, whalewatching and restaraunt suggestions.
The rooms were quite a bit smaller than represented on the website but that’s common, and not that big of a deal anyway(who wants to travel that far to just sit in a room?).
We will most likely stay there again.
July 14th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Our stay at the Elements was wonderful. The beds were comfy, and the staff friendly and helpful. We will stay again!
July 14th, 2007 at 11:39 am
Ouch, Chris, that’s something I wouldn’t repeat either. I really appreciate hearing about it and I’m very sorry your experience didn’t meet our usually high standards. The evidence seems to suggest your room got missed on the housekeeping list and that’s just not acceptable to us. I will do everything I can to make sure it never happens again. We’ve always felt that room cleanliness is one of the big non-negotiables for hotels and we never want anyone to have the experience you had. I hope you called the front desk as soon as you noticed something was amiss: we would jump right on fixing those problems. If you would like to talk about anything in detail, please feel free to email me directly at adam@hotelelements.com. Again, I am very, very sorry.
July 14th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Just a little note to let you know of our dissapointment with your facility.
The first night was fine, other than you advertise a spa robe and there was none to be found. Also the rooms are way smaller than you show on the web site. A kid was replacing a roof across from our room so we got to listen to that until after 7 p.m.
On Thursday, July 12th we returned. There was one bar of soap left for us that looked like it had been in someones back pack for a year. The shower stall had not been cleaned. There was soap residue and scum on the shelf in the shower. The sinks back up, and overall I feel it was not worth the $200+ we paid per night.
I would probably not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone else.
July 14th, 2007 at 7:56 am
We stayed at Elements during the last week of June and had a wonderful stay. The staff was very warm, friendly and very accommodating. The room was very cozy and I loved the decor. Only one thing that I noticed was that the bathroom is pretty small, which was fine, but it seemed that the shower curtain was too close to the toilet. I might suggest a straight shower curtain rod rather than a curved rod to give a little more space between the shower and the toilet. I love Friday Harbor and would definitely stay at the Elements again!

We were traveling to San Juan island for an overnight with our daughters who had participated in a gymnastics competition in Seattle. We came from upstate New York and felt so welcome at Elements. Your staff at the front desk were extremely nice and accomadating. We loved the hotel and our girls loved the pool and hot tub. I would recommend your hotel to anyone. It was convient to downtown and we could walk anywhere. Your rooms were very clean and comfortable. All and all we had a great stay at your hotel for a very reasonable price.

The Element Hotel and Spa completed our first mini vacation to the San Juan Island. I fell in love with the Element hotel with its hip modern style and when I saw the Wind Place online, I knew I want to stay there for one night. And turn out the only opening day for July landed right on my 28th birthday. The rooms were nicely decorated it feels like just right at home. With our own parking lot, back yard lounge chair, we utilize them well. We were chatting away till 2am without affecting other guests and when we hit the bed, the sheet was so comfortable and loves the pillow. But the down side of the room was that there were no AC (of cause it was the hottest day of the year) and the wind place was too close to the busy street. It was really noise start early in the morning. Not really peaceful for the sleep in guest. Also, I’ll love to suggest that if Element can put a fire pit next to the lounge chairs outside, will be great for the cold Washington weather.

Just an overnight stay - first visit to Friday Harbor - We were enthusiastic, from reading web site, about the “elements” and chose earth - should have chosen another as felt as though we were in a cave with only natural light coming from window along outside passage, thus providing little privacy - Room was well appointed and very comfortable although felt there should have been a table between the two chairs near the window - Our room was considered a redone, but the tub/shower still had that cheap shampoo/soap dispenser - and too, the new shower head looked as though it would fall off at any given moment as it was not properly attached - An attempt at using the non-gear bikes was a joke - noticed that almost every bike rider had a bike with gears for the hills - we opted to walk instead - The front desk staff was excellent - warm, friendly and professional - most helpful in suggestioning restaurants in the area and biking/walking trails - A continental breakfast of juice, fruit and rolls would be a pleasant addition - Some glitches to be worked out -

All in all, I was pleased with our brief one night stay. The rooms flow well and they are clean. There was an empty toilet paper roll on the dispenser though and no garbage can in the bathroom. This is unprofessional at any hotel/motel.
The tv and controller situation seems to be a out of control too. The controller should be programmed at all times in all rooms. Clients come to a hotel to relax. We don’t want to get up every time we change the channel. No matter how little tv you actually watch during your stay, the controller should be fully functional. It seemed like an ongoing problem. I appreciate the help though;].
The staff was helpful and friendly! The massage was a life saver too.
You guys have a good thing going for you, but there are a few tweeks that need to be made for it to shine. Elements already sticks out from the rest. Now all that’s left is the fine tuning.
Just some constructive criticism. If I did’t open my mouth, I would be doing a disfavor to your establishment and I wouldn’t feel right in my own skin.
Take care.

For centralized location, comfortability and a reasonable rate, you can’t beat this place when staying in Friday Harbor. An old college buddy of mine and I stayed there 1 night while on a sea kayaking/whale watching adventure fabulous!)and found the place to be clean, roomy and quiet. One glaring drawback was no AC on an exceptionally hot day/night but the fan, when put in a window made the room temp tolerable. Also there was an unfortunate incident at 1:30 a.m. when I awoke to smell cigarette smoke coming into the room and when I opened the door I came face to face with a very, drunk hip hop sort of fellow puffing away. With more than enough politeness I asked him if he could please go somewhere else and smoke because the smoke was being drawn into our room by the fan. After a long time of staring at me, he simply said F_ _ _ you and challenged me to a fight. All I did was close the door and wait for him to finish his cigarette and go into #205 and pass out, which he did, but not before pounding on the wall a few times. Not the type of person you want staying next to you but I guess he paid his $. One final comment: I erroneously booked our stay online for June 9 and so when we showed up on July 9 the front desk had already accounted for me as a no-show. Graciously, after conferring with the manager, the front desk clerk allowed us credit for the amount already charged plus an additional 50 bucks or so for the higher peak season rate. This was quite an honorable, professional, conscionable gesture and it will always stick with me because I could have just as easily been told, Sorry, you screwed up and that’s it. So, without hesitation I would recommend Elements to anyone on their way to Friday Harbor and as for myself I would always return.

Thanks Sarah. And sorry, Inji, but the dog run behind us is officially a town street. No one ever uses it because it doesn’t go through, and the town has kind of forgotten about it and let nature reclaim it. Hope to see you three again soon….

I took my Husband to Elements to celebrate his 30th birthday. I got exactly what I wanted; someplace walking distance from the ferry, jacuzzi jets in the tub, onsite spa, and pet friendly accomodations. Above and beyond what I wanted were the nice gardens and great staff. We were there far too short of a time, only 1 night stay, so we didn’t get a chance to do much else but get an AWESOME couples massage, eat and sleep, but we went to recharge and that we did. I appreciated the pet walking area, too, and would’ve loved to let Inji run off leash but the 2 ends or the run are open. I am interested to hear if there are plans to gate it off for more security.
The decor is nice. My husband was very pleased. I’d go back to Elements in a heartbeat and I would recommend it to friends as well.

We spent a night at ELEMENTS in June and were extremely satisfied with the accomidations. The room was not large, but very well designed and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. Certainly the location was great for us as it was near the Ferry and that made it very convenient. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The restaurant “across the street” in the bowling alley, that you recommended, had a great breakfast and the folk there were very friendly, as well. A wonderful experience. Thanks for everything.

Hot tub too hot; hot tub too cool. After reading some of the comments by fellow visitors to Elements once again I am reminded how hard it is to please everyone.
We have traveled all over the world for business and fun and have stayed in every kind of location and stayed in every kind of bed, so I think we can bring some experience to our comments.
It is great you ask and want this infomration;it is how you improve and what you do to stay in business over the years. (More business ought to put these habits into practice.) It is also very clear how much effort and thought you have put into the changes made to this old but still functional facility. We want to help be a part of your sucess and so will provide you our comments.
Although we only were here 2 days and one night this visit, we maximized our time and to do that we needed good information. The staff was friendly, paitient, and helpful in answering our questions in detail and we found their knowledge to be accurate and opinions solid.
For folks who are spending most of their time outside of the hotel the rooms were just fine. The beds were awesome, thank you. I think if I had little ones, with all their gear, and spending a bit more time around the room they might be a bit tight, but still functional if you are organized. For the small admenities, including fan, thank you. Although after living in Alaska, and being use paying higher prices due to location, you do expect a few little extras for the price. The price was reasonable and for those who do not know it in many other locations of this type you would be paying 50 to 100% more. The grounds were well tended and helped create that relaxing atmosphere. Keep it up. And we appreciated being able to use the pool bathrooms until our rooms were ready.
A couple of minor issues. The shower water ran warm and cool, not uncomfortable but….
I missed out on those great “reading lights” someone else mentioned; as a matter of fact 3 out of the 4 of us wanted to read before bed and did not have reading lights to do so.
We all had a great night sleep and were happy the next morning. So I think you did your jobs.
July 5th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
We stayed at the Elements in late June of 2007. We were delighted with the modern decorating and beautiful colors. My sister-in-law and I both said that we felt like doing “yoga” that’s how elaxing the mood was. We were happy to be able to walk to various restaurants and shops. My only suggestion would be to offer a continental breafast of helathy selections. We’re from Wisconsin…but we hope to come back to the Elements!
July 5th, 2007 at 11:20 am
This was my first visit to the San Juan Islands and I had a pleasant introduction when I opened the door to my room. The hardwood floors, wall colorings and decor truly set the atmosphere for a relaxing weekend kayaking and whale watching. I was really impressed by the elegant white duvet cover on the bed, I would love to purchase one for my bedroom! Thank you again for a great weekend!
July 3rd, 2007 at 11:11 am
We stayed here with a 4 year old and a 15 month old. Nice, spacious room with the kitchenette a big plus (vs trying to eat out with two worn out kids). Great parking, easy to walk to the entire downtown. Pool and jacuzzi were great. Would definitely return!
July 3rd, 2007 at 3:55 am
We have stayed with you before your “revolution”. It’s nice to be close to the marina. The rooms are refreshing and the bed was comfortable. Thankyou for the refrigerator and the coffee pot.
We’ll be back.

Congratulations Stew! You are the winner of our June drawing for one free night. For anyone who missed it on the front page, each month we randomly select the name of one lucky blogger from the guest reviews section to receive a gift certificate for one free night at Elements. Thanks everyone for your helpful feedback. Good luck in the July drawing….

We had a wonderful time at the hotel overnight during the grand re-opening weekend over Cinco de Mayo. Our daughter had 2 softball games in town so we decided to extend the trip to an overnighter. We walked on the ferry and found it very easy to get to the hotel. We had stayed here 2 years ago when our son had a basketball tourney. We enjoyed the complimentary bikes (only suggestion would be to have smaller models for kids) and had a great time in the pool (only suggestion is more towels) We loved our room, beds were incredible and the spaciousness was perfect for our family. Thank you for asking about our stay and we’ll be back again. Lori Walser

We stayed at Elements in late May and found it to be the best place for our romantic get-away. I loved the look of the remodeled rooms and the soft comfy bed! The location was perfect for walking around town and the staff was friendly and available. We will come back. A BIG THANK YOU!

To me the Hotel and Spa reference conjours up certain expectations that I didn’t really find at this particular hotel/motel, we did have an enjoyable stay. The staff were all very friendly and helpful especially with recommendations for eating establishments. The location is great - when we come again we would most certainly walk on the ferry instead of driving because of the ease of walking. We enjoyed the hot tub and pool very much. The rooms (while “cozy” -need to move the TV further from the bed in the room we were in- the bed was most comfortable and the color scheme very nice - in fact the room decor/bedding reminded us of our recent stay at a Westin property. We would definitely stay here again.
June 29th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Well, mixed results for us. Some glitches . . .could not get the spa to answer the phone or return a message (went elsewhere for massage); room was snug; was advised by staff the ice machine is locked up after 10pm (huh?); room was not cleaned by staff (they stopped by and dropped off towels but did not return to clean although invited to do so); hot and cold water surprises during showers; and view of a parking lot was not expected and disappointing.
On the up side, staff were mostly friendly, beds were comfy, good reading lights (a novelty in most motor hotels), very appreciate of willingness to change arrival and departure, Pergo-type floors a nice touch, and nice interior paint scheme.
I think you are on to something; hoping these comments will help a little as you work to refine your services and product. Best wishes down the road.

We celebrated our 1st year of marriage at Friday Harbor. We had a nice time at your hotel. Great location. Front desk gave us some great suggestions for dinner. Thanks!
June 29th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
This was my husband and I’s first trip to San Juan Islands to spend the weekend. We were celebrating his birthday with a kayak trip and some fun. We had a great time, the room was wonderful. Small things for improvement, my bike tire was a wee flat, but workable. And there were little to no towels every time we went to be in the hot tub (okay it was twice). But the front desk was friendly, the room was clean and the establishment relaxing, we would definitely return.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Hi Christine, I sure hope there was just a misunderstanding about the water view, because we are pretty clear with all our staff to under-represent the rooms. I’ll remind everyone, just in case. At any rate, everyone should know that we don’t have any water-view rooms. It’s actually kind of weird that on an island, surrounded by water, there should be so few water-view rooms. If water view is your main interest, consider one of the top-floor rooms at Friday’s Historic Inn, or the Friday Harbor House. Also, folks should know that some of our rooms have AC, others don’t. It generally cools off nicely in the evenings here, and AC isn’t a frequent request; but if we catch a heat wave it would really nice to have in all the rooms. That’s something we’ll certainly consider in the next remodel. In the meantime, if you’re concerned about temperature, be sure to ask our reservation staff if an AC room is available when you book. Christine, I am really sorry if you requested a call or email on your comment card and didn’t get one. If I haven’t addressed your questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at adam@hotelelements.com. Thanks for your comments!

Stayed 3 days at the end of May, weather was great, but room had no A/C and was extremely hot. Was sold something more attractive over the phone, such as water view, which this hotel does not have. When I told the front desk of the problem she told me that we could look at other hotels, as a business owner was shocked by this and thought it was a bit rude. Very noisy, but it could of been becouse several school busses trying to find parking. To be honest had a decent stay, think becouse my first impression was poor it set me experience with the hotel negitive. Left comment card to be called and no one has returned a call or email?

Dear Elements,
Thanks for a very enjoyable stay at beautiful Friday
Harbor. The newly remodeled room I stayed in was very quiet
and comfortable, and your convenient location in town made for a very pleasant and relaxing stay. I look forward to my next opportunity to stay at Elements. Best regards,
Keith.

My daughter had just finished her freshman year at Western Washington University, so we toured the islands before returning to the flatlands of Minnesota. Your staff was a great help in maximizing our time. In the short time we were able to spend on San Juan island, we caught a sunset and “missed” the whales and bought a present for the missing mom who had to stay at home. After my wife found your website, we were in trouble. Needless to say, a visit and longer stay is on the top of her list…and my daughter and I will be back for the whales. If we keep missing them…we will have to keep coming back…not a bad thought.
June 28th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Our family came to visit the Pacific NW the last part of May - 1st week in June. As part of their stay, we decided to make a quick trip to San Juan Island mostly to take in a whale-watching tour and an overnight stay on the Island. I can only say that the time on the Island was too short, but very much a treat!! To be completely honest, when I first walked in Elements in my shorts, T-shirt and beach shoes, I thought we had made a reservation to the very same place that we avoiding - all fru-fru and all when we only came to get away and relax. Although very nice indeed, we were treated with a very polite and courteous staff who did everything and anything (including before our arrival) to ensure that our visit was what we expected it to be even if only for an overnight visit. We left Elements the next day all refreshed and rejuvenated wishing we had planned to stay longer. Thank you a nice, quiet, relaxing stay! We had a wonderful time!

We have stayed at this property a time or two in the past and always felt this was excellent lodging and a perfect location for our group. We booked about 20 rooms and were were happy with the service, the nicely updated rooms, the pool, the bicycles, and the price. The staff was accomadating and helpful. We would not hesitate to plan another stay in the future.

Thanks so much for all the great comments so far. We obviously love basking in your warm praise for our little Friday Harbor hybrid hotel/motel project, and it is heartening to see how many of you had a great time at ELEMENTS. We also truly appreciate hearing about what didn’t work so well, even though we are very sorry. Our goal is always 100% satisfaction, so if you are ever unhappy with any aspect of your stay, please let us know as soon as possible so we can try to fix whatever isn’t working for you. Hearing from you is how we continually improve, and you can rest assured that we are hard about the business of fixing whatever isn’t right and expanding whatever is.
I did want to write a little about island pricing, since it is something of a surprise for some of you. It is true that in general you get a little less for each dollar here than on the mainland. It’s true at the grocery store, at the gas station, with the electric and water company, in the labor force and it’s also true with island lodging. It’s just a little more expensive to do anything in the ferry-driven, somewhat-remote island economy, and that adds up to higher prices. We try to pack as much value into ELEMENTS as we can, but you do kind of have to expect to pay a bit more for things when you visit San Juan Island.
ELEMENTS is creeping toward the high-middle end of island pricing, and we think you get a lot of value for your island-adjusted dollar here. If you’re looking for something cheaper, though, we are always happy to recommend alternatives. It’s part of our 100% satisfaction goal to sometimes recommend the competition. If price is really your main consideration, and you find ELEMENTS just a little too steep, consider one of the economy rooms at our sister property, Friday’s Historic Inn, or Juniper Lane Guest House. Juniper’s place is just outside of town, but she is a consummate host and a really cool person. The rates are amazing for San Juan Island.
Thanks again. We hope to see you all on the island again soon.

We stayed 2 night in june. The rooms have been tastefully updated. It is convienently located in Firday Harbor. We found it to be a good value for our $. If you are expecting the Ritz them there are some other places that maybe nicer but get out your cedit card.

We stayed at Elements for 5 days in late May and really enjoyed our first trip to San Juan Island. The hotel was comfortable though standard rooms might be a bit small for 2 adults and 2 children. The kids enjoyed the pool daily and we loved sitting on the patio reading our books while they swam. The location was terrific - within walking distance to dining, shopping, movies and more. The beds were very comfortable and the front desk staff was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The only problem we had was a leaky shower which was promptly fixed. The cleaning service could have been better and although I understand that sheets might not be washed daily due to limited water on the island, sweeping the floor each day should be expected. Overall, our stay was very enjoyable and I would recommend this hotel and plan to stay there again in the future.
June 28th, 2007 at 8:00 am
Elements - thank you for a great stay. We had the fortunate opportunity to stay in your remodeled room and it was splendid. My son took advantage of the heated swimming pool each day while I kept an eye on him in your work out room!
June 27th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
We visited San Juan island for the first time last weekend (June 22-24), and our stay at Elements was quite comfortable. Our two girls loved the heated pool and the complimentary hot chocolate, and I appreciated the clean updated rooms, and amenities like the mini-fridge and microwave. We all loved the beds — they were soft, comfortable and very inviting. We found the staff very helpful and knowledgeable about local island events and restaurants, which was nice since this was our first visit. And the room was very well-priced given the local market.
We also enjoyed how beautifully maintained the grounds were– in late June everything is blooming and fresh and green, and in the evening there were little rows of white lights in some of the trees and pathways. Very nice.
This is not a super-lux four star hotel, but it was very evident to us that the owners put a LOT of thought and care into upgrading the property. What was once an average drive-up motel is now a quaint, modern, inviting place to stay with its own definite personality. There are still a few small things to work out (the counter barstools in our room were new but rickety, and an AC system in the rooms would be nice, though a fan worked well during our stay), but overall we’d rate it a 4.5 on a scale of 5, and we will DEFINITELY be returning again.
Oh, and please keep looking for a decent barista– we cannot wait for the coffee and smoothie bar to be open!
June 27th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
My two girls and I stayed five nights at Elements. On a scale of 1-10 I would give them a 5. While it boasts of extensive renovations, overall it is old and kind of shabby… The rooms look far nicer and bigger on the web than they actually are. The beds were too soft and left us with sore backs upon waking. Eventually the girls slept on the floor and were fine. The furniture was flimsy and uncomfortable. Not all of the lights worked. Our room was not cleaned once during our stay. We got fresh towels, and coffee, but little else by way of service. The pool was small and the hot tub temperature was too hot to be comfortable; indeed it was shut down one night due to an unsuitable pH level. The girls were told to get out and hurry back to the room, take their swimsuits off and take a bath/shower. The front desk staff persons were nice, but overall did not seem as well experienced or knowledgeable as I had expected. The best feature is the location; within easy walking distance of everything central and fun. The worst feature is the price-far too pricey for what you get. I probably would not stay there if I were to vacation on the island again.

I come to Friday Harbor about three times a year and have been doing so for the past twelve years or so. I think Elements is now the best value hotel/motel/inn on the island. I had stayed there in its previous incarnation, and have stayed in many of the hotels/motels/ins on the island, but it is now sooo much nicer than it was, and very pretty — and it is one of the lower priced hotels/motels/inns on the island.
I stayed there in February, 2007 and it was such a wonderful surprise. Everything is new and nice. The room interiors are very pretty, and the rooms are very large. The staff was efficient and courteous. I returned to Friday Harbor in June, 2007 with my family and we all stayed at Elements again. We were very pleased with our room and the staff. I expect to stay there when I return in the fall.
P.S. For visitors to Friday Harbor, I recommend buying Emily’s Guide and Map. Very helpful and always up to date.

We stayed in a newly remodeld room with our 2 doberman puppies for two nights. It was our 2nd time we stayed here (1st time under the old name). We were there for our nephews wedding and had a great time. Our bed was very new and comfortable. We loved the nice deck where we could sip our coffee in the morning (early as the puppies get us up early for their duty). The pet area was extremely easy to get to and use. Our room was super clean, tidy and the bathrooms were spotless. It was our first road trip with our 4 month old puppies and it was a breeze. Everyone made us feel comfortable. We love South Beach area as well which is a good spot for walking dogs. You have our repeat business for sure. Thanks for making our stay memorable and very comfortable.
June 27th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
The hotel rooms look better on the website than in person. The room was clean but the heater in the bathroom didn’t work. I think it was overpriced.I don’t think I would recommend staying here. Friday Harbor is great and the Duck Soup Inn was outstanding.

Our stay at the Elements was fantastic. It is even better than advertised. Everything including the staff is first class. We would strongly recommend the Elements to anyone looking for a first class place to stay in Friday Harbor. Also the Elements is very easy to find, and located close to everything in Friday Harbor. Thank you for a great experience. We will see you again in the near future for sure.
Have a great day

Hey,
The Stay was great. We had lots of fun. The hotel is nicely located and the rooms are just great.
Looking forward to another wonderful visit.

hotel was nice, Island was fun, overall it was a great time
June 27th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Our stay at Elements was a happy chance. We plucked the name off the internet and were delighted by the room, the bed, the cleanliness and the one staff person we saw.
We loved San Juan Island….the lavender farm and South Beach especially. Alas, we only had one short day and night to spend but should we ever get the chance to return to that area of the country (we are from NH) we would definitely stay at Elements again. Thanks for making our short stay one to remember!
June 27th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
We stay here everytime we visit the Island. My kids love to swim and an indoor pool is a must. It was a nice enough place to stay when it was The Friday Harbor Inn, but now under new management,it is much nicer. We noticed the room was updated with fresh colors, the bedspreads seemed brand new and the bathroom was spotless. I made my kids take off their shoes before entering because I did not want to mess the nice looking floors. We will continue to be routine customers.
June 27th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
The rooms were terrific! Beds were fantastic. The day was warm well int o the night and we asked for a window fan which was more than enough to cool us down. The pool and hot tub were a great way to take off the stresses of life. The staff were very freindly.
June 27th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
We had a great time at Elements Spa. We visited for the island marathon and I loved that you could “borrow” bikes from Elements. I believe we had one of the rooms that hadn’t been renovated but it was still a nice place to stay for sure, although it may have been one of the smaller rooms. I thought the bed was very comfortable and I slept very, very well….important before running all those miles! Unless you are super picky and request things that no hotel would ever have (like a dvd player! ha! I have yet to see that at a hotel….), you will enjoy your time. I would go back for sure.
Thanks!

My wife and I were there to celebrate our 5th year anniversary and her 25th birthday. We were equally impressed with everything that the hotel had to offer. The staff was AMAZING!!! They made us feel like we were…celebrities! We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. All that the island had to offer, we experienced and loved. I have to thank the staff (especially Monica) for helping me with my anniversary plans by recommending the “Duck Soup Inn” which every guest should experience. I wouldn’t change a thing except, to book earlier in advance for the room with the kitchenette. Thanks again to the staff at Elements for making our stay a memorable one!!
June 27th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
The travelling Ya Ya’s experienced an amazing weekend at Elements and were very impressed with the style and taste regarding the renovations! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are certain to come back again soon.
Keep up the great work!
Cheers

Our visit to Elements was wrapped around a 3 day 2 night kayaking adventure. We were very pleased with both nights stay. The service was above par and the facilities left us wanting more. I particularily loved the dry sauna and whirlpool. The rooms were quaint with very comfy bedding. This was a lovely place to come back to after 3 days on the open water.
Thanks to everyone who made us feel at home.
June 27th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
My family and I stayed two nights and really did not want to leave. What a great place to relax and have fun with the family. The room was wonderful and very large, we cooked most of our meals and loved the pool and location.
I work for a hotel in Anacortes and recommend this place often to anyone going to the island! Thanks, we’ll be back.
June 27th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
The room was very nicely done- the beds were very comfortable! I took my daughter there for a girls weekend, and we had a great time- it is very accessible to both the ferry and downtown, which was great (we didn’t need to bring a car along!). Suggestions for improvements include a DVD/VCR player in the room, a more upscale coffee selection for the room (maybe the local island brew??), and a hotter hot tub.
We had a great time.
